More FuelSure facts - Why deliberate misfuelling can be a big mistake

Some time ago, especially in cold weather, some people deliberately practised misfuelling by adopting the procedure of diluting their diesel fuel with petrol. The idea was to prevent the diesel fuel from solidifying and make starting the engine easier. In the absence of any diesel misfuelling device, the practice continued, rather like the myth that letting your tyres down a little gives you better traction (it doesn’t).

Nowadays, at Stop Diesel Misfuelling we can tell you that such a procedure makes little sense (if it ever made any before) for a number of reasons. These include the fact that oil companies and filling stations typically propose winter diesel as a specifically adapted and safe version of diesel fuel, and also because cars that are produced today and that form a larger and larger part of the total number of cars are conversely less and less tolerant of anything other than the ‘right’ diesel.

Misfuelling on purpose has a number of negative effects, starting with the waste of time and effort because it is unnecessary. It has knock-on effects on the state of pump and fuel seals which may suffer corrosion, as well as altering the viscosity of the fuel, which is an important consideration in modern common, rail diesel engines. In the same way that an internal combustion engine is designed to integrate the notion of ‘back-pressure’ from the exhaust system, common rail injection systems use extremely high pressure against a known viscosity of diesel fuel when injecting it into the diesel engine. The wrong viscosity of diesel fuel that has been mixed with petrol and the presence of petrol itself leads to a portion of the fuel not being burnt correctly. It’s better to be safe and prevent misfuelling with FuelSure.

Unburned fuel then exits from the engine to move into the exhaust system, where it may either then burn to cause excessively or dangerously high temperatures, clog catalytic exhaust systems or find its way out of the exhaust tail pipe to pollute the environment. Unburned petrol or diesel fuel in the environment is toxic and contributes to pollution of land, water and air alike. Even the use of bio diesel which in normal use can be described as ‘carbon-neutral’, meaning that the carbon compound gases that it produces in combustion are safely and naturally absorbed by plant life, cannot help in these cases of misfuelling.

The typical options for removing diesel after a spillage in liquid form for example unfortunately do not apply for unburned fuel coming out of exhaust pipes. The cleansing products and enzymes designed to clear away localised diesel pollution will not work against diesel that has been vaporised but left unburned, because of misfuelling. Stop the problem today with FuelSure.

As older generation cars gradually disappear from circulation, newer generation cars arrive with more sophisticated internal systems and power chains. Even if the more basic, older diesel engines might have coped with a certain level of abuse, for the newer systems it’s a different story. So even if the protection of the environment does not have the same importance for you personally, here’s another reason not to misfuel for newer diesel engine cars, and to fit FuelSure today.

Misfuelling and operating common rail injection engines for example can mean breakdown and the need for fuel system removal, flushing and re-installation right the way back from fuel injectors, fuel filters, main high-pressure fuel pump for the common rail system, fuel lines, and the fuel tank itself with the second pump that is attached to it.

If you are now convinced that there is no good reason to deliberately misfuel, then there is still one eventuality left. That despite everything we’ve just said, you do it by mistake. The petrol won’t care. It’ll do all of the damage referred to above anyway. So if you’d like to avoid such an unexpected tragedy, a simple device, FuelSure, that stops any attempt, deliberate or not, to misfuel, might be just what you need.
