Because misfuelling is such a frequent problem, and because of the potentially catastrophic effects of using the wrong fuel in a diesel engine car, a number of misfuelling prevention devices have come on to the market. Some of them may be better known than others, some of them are more effective, others have simply come and gone.
The simplest misfuelling solution
If you have two or more vehicles in your family using different fuels, an elementary step towards preventing misfuelling is to adopt simple colour-codes for the car keys. A logical choice might be green for a petrol-engine car and black or yellow for a diesel engine car, in keeping with the standard colours for fuel pumps of the same types, respectively. Putting highly visible labels on the filler caps or even on the dashboard as to which fuel to use in the car concerned is also recommended. As a misfuelling prevention device, it might not be foolproof, but it costs next to nothing and can help in the fight for diesel misfuel prevention. However, if you’d like to do a lot better, check out the FuelSure
The light-activated warning diesel misfuelling device.
This device plays an audible warning message when a driver prepares to fill the car’s fuel tank, to say that diesel fuel must be used. What it does not do is to physically prevent another fuel such as petrol being poured in. Users of this misfuelling prevention device (or ‘missfueling prevention’ given that the device hails from America) often complain of the device drawing unwelcome attention at the fuel pump. The audible warning can be heard from some distance away. Television presenter Jeremy Clarkson took public exception to this misfuelling prevention device on his TV programme. We sympathise.
Magnetic misfuelling prevention devices.
A further proposed solution is a magnetic disc attached to the fuel cap, the disc being chosen according to whether your car runs on petrol or diesel. The idea is that when you arrive at the filling station, you stick your fuel cap on the corresponding base of the fuel pump after selecting your fuel. If your fuel cap stays in place, that means that you have selected the right pump. If your fuel cap falls to the ground, then the wrong pump has been selected. The advantage is one of low cost, although once again this method does not physically prevent a petrol nozzle from being introduced into a diesel filler neck. You will also have to untether your fuel filler cap if it is attached to the filler neck as many are. If you really want to be sure that you’ll never make this kind of mistake, then move to FuelSure instead.
A misfuelling prevention device that literally prevents using the wrong fuel
Many motoring organisations agree that the only real way to deal with misfuelling is to physically prevent the wrong fuel from getting into the fuel tank. To do this, a diesel misfuelling device must stop a smaller standard unleaded petrol nozzle from being introduced into a diesel tank filler neck, yet allow a larger diesel nozzle to work unhindered. Sounds like magic? Good news, it’s FuelSure, it’s a reality today and is one of the simplest, most cost-effective misfueling solutions that actually work.
