Why a good misfuelling device like FuelSure prevents damage to diesel engines

There two ways of tackling the question of any misfuelling device: either by modifying the fuel pumps in filling stations to prevent distribution of the wrong fuel; or by physically preventing the wrong fuel from entering the fuel tank filler neck. Oil companies got part of the way there by making the unleaded petrol pump nozzle smaller than that of the diesel pump. Perhaps motivated by the high percentage of drivers who historically drove petrol-engine cars, they in fact wanted to prevent drivers from putting leaded petrol into cars designed to work with unleaded. FuelSure is there to complete the job.

By coincidence, they also effectively prevented drivers from putting diesel fuel into cars designed to run on unleaded petrol. This in itself is a good thing. Unfortunately, they left the door wide open for drivers to put petrol into cars designed to run on diesel. While petrol engines won’t work properly (or even not at all) on diesel fuel, and while it is a nuisance to have to empty the fuel tank and start again, petrol engines do not potentially suffer as much in the way of damage as diesel engines that are misfuelled using petrol. When diesel engines are misfuelled using petrol, the situation is very different. The very presence of petrol in a diesel fuel system can not only prevent the engine from working but can also cause horrendous damage. FuelSure makes all of that a memory.

The petrol that replaces diesel when no effective misfuelling device is used does exactly the opposite to diesel, by dissolving away any lubricant. Unfortunately, in today’s diesel engines, diesel pumps are made to extremely fine tolerances and rely on the ‘oily’ property of diesel for the moving parts to move over one another correctly. If this oiliness is stripped out by petrol that has been misfuelled into the engine, the metal-to-metal direct contact causes particles of metal to break away and begin to circulate through the engine.

Oil companies have not yet come up with the miracle fuel pump that only ever serves the ‘right fuel’. The solution today is an effective misfuelling device fitted to the car or vehicle itself. FuelSure is a remarkably effective diesel misfuelling device, acting even before the driver has a chance to turn the ignition back on or activate central locking.

The ignition phenomenon, meaning the damage that starts when the key is simply turned in the ignition, without starting the motor, is relatively recent. Doing this (sometimes simply activating central unlocking has the same effect) in many latest generation cars activates an electric pump working at low pressure in the tank or sender unit. The pump sends the contaminated fuel through to the fuel rail in an effort to ready the vehicle for immediate starting, and the damage begins.

Fuel in common rail systems may be also subjected to back and forth motion, in accordance with the way that these engines work. The result can rapidly (for example, as soon as switching the ignition on) mean thorough cleaning or replacement of both low and high pressure pumps, fuel tank, fuel filters, fuel rail and injectors. Repair costs increase disproportionately with the level of sophistication of the engine. It’s no wonder that in some extreme cases, it may literally be cheaper and less time-consuming to fit an entire new motor assembly. Opting for FuelSure instead makes so much more sense, yet costs so little.
