Avoiding misfuelling is better than having to fix it afterwards. This may be easier said than done in some circumstances, but here are simple steps that you can take to always be on the right side of a misfueling solution.
1. FuelSure says - Know what fuel is required for the vehicle that you are driving. This sounds simple enough, but nowadays with diesel-engine vehicles starting as quickly and almost as quietly as petrol-engine vehicles, appearances can be deceptive. This is even truer if you are not driving your own car, for example, if you have borrowed or rented another car. There may be a sticker on the filler cap to say that the vehicle only uses diesel fuel, but don’t rely on it being there. If in doubt, ask. And if you feel the need to attach a highly visible handmade notice to that effect with adhesive tape to the dashboard, then why not? (after asking permission if you need to and checking that you are not obscuring any part of the dashboard that you still need to see).
2. FuelSure says - At the filling station, check the colours of the pump nozzles. The standard colour coding is green for petrol and black for diesel. In some filling stations in the UK as on the continent, you may also see yellow pump guns for diesel. The situation is complicated sometimes by the fact that some forecourts use sub-branding for their fuels, leading to varying pump gun colours. As pumps are often multi-distribution, then when you pick the fuel gun or nozzle that you require, check that the price per litre that is then displayed on the pump corresponds to the fuel that you require.
3. FuelSure says - Watch out for any suspiciously large amount of ‘wiggle’ room, when you insert the nozzle into the fuel tank filler neck of your vehicle,. Whereas diesel nozzles just won’t fit into recent standard petrol-engine car filler necks, it is an unfortunate fact that the contrary is not true: unleaded petrol nozzles can fit into diesel tank filler necks, even if they look strangely small. If this is the case, or if you even have a doubt, do not fill at all. Take the nozzle out and check, or seek competent assistance. Don’t risk misfueling.
4. FuelSure says - If you realise that you are misfuelling by putting petrol into a diesel tank, then stop immediately. Any more petrol that you put in will be wasted money, because your only reasonable solution will probably be to get the tank drained completely and refill with diesel. You may also want to exercise tact and diplomacy in explaining to the driver of the car waiting behind you that you have misfuelled and that you now need to get your tank drained before even starting your car again.
All of the above is simple enough. However, some days will bring you more than their fair share of distractions or problems, and your risk of misfueling can be significantly higher. If there’s any chance that you might miss one of the preventive steps detailed above, then save yourself the pain and cost of putting misfuelling right, by installing FuelSure, a misfueling solution that is simple, ineffective and works every time.
