The diesel nozzle is larger than the gas nozzle.  The larger nozzle means the diesel tank has to have a larger hole to fill the fuel tank.  Since the gas nozzle is smaller it can go in the diesel hole without one being really aware of what they have done.  A lot of the time we have other things on our mind when we are performing a task like fuelling our car.  We might be stressed about work, money, or other things.  These distractions make it very easy to lift the gas nozzle and put it in the tank before we become aware.

A mistake with the wrong fuel can be costly.  The average tank draining is £150-£350.  However, if the car is driven before the mistake is caught you could be looking at as much as £7000 to fix the entire engine and the problem the wrong fuel can create.  The wrong fuel in an engine will cause it to stall, and then you have to clean out the engine and replace any parts that may have broken as a result.
